To make the perfect pizza, you need to start with a great dough to give you the perfect crust! Not too thin and not too thick, this easy dough recipe is crispy and delicious. This is a great recipe to involve kids with; they can get their hands dirty, and enjoy eating the end result.

Pizza Dough Recipe Ingredients

  • home-made-prosciutto-buffalo-mozzarella-rocket-pizza2 sachets dried yeast (7g each sachet)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 125ml warm water
  • 3 cups plain flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 210ml warm water

Pizza Dough Recipe Method

Combine yeast, sugar and 125ml warm water in a small bowl, then cover with a tea towel and stand in a warm place for approximately 20 minutes until frothy. If it is particularly cool/cold in your kitchen, turn your oven on at 50ºC for two minutes then turn it off again and leave for a few minutes before you place the bowl in the oven; the residual heat in the oven will be enough to kick start the yeast.

Note that yeast will start to react at temperatures of approximately 35ºC, so ensure that your water is warm enough to begin with. A quick test to check water temperature is right is to dip your finger in the water, it shouldn’t feel hot or cold and should be about the same temperature as your body. Also note that yeast will die (and your mixture will become un-useable) in temperatures above 45-50ºC, so definitely don’t use boiling water.

Sift flour and salt into a large bowl. Stir in additional (210ml) warm water, yeast mixture and oil and mix to a soft dough; it should come away from the sides of the bowl. Turn mixture out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Brush some oil around the inside of the bowl, then place the dough back into the bowl and cover with a tea towel. Stand in a warm place for about an hour until the dough has doubled in size (again, follow the instructions above if your kitchen is not warm enough).

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for a few minutes. Divide into six balls and then roll each ball out to approximately 1 cm thick. Place bases on greased oven trays, top with pizza sauce and favourite toppings, then bake in a preheated oven at 220ºC for approximately 10-15 minutes until the toppings are bubbling and the crust is golden.
